Wing Nuts

A wing nut or a butterfly nut is a type of nut that has two large metal wings. These are used in locations where things can be fastened without tools. A fastener with a male thread is known as a wing screw or a wing bolt. 

These nuts, which are mostly used as safety nuts, have slots in them for cotter pins or wires that go through drilled holes in the bolt to secure it. These nuts have a slot in them for a cotter pin or wire that locks the bolt once it has been bored with a hole.
